In the seventh grade, we have been working with our students to develop expectations around the use of their iPads. We understand that as middle level students, there is the potential to misuse technology. Therefore, we have created a system to help our students learn to manage their own iPad use. We have also developed age appropriate consequences for students who deal with an ongoing struggle in managing their iPad behaviors.
When a student is not following the technology expectations (for example a student is playing a game during instructional time), we will take the ipad and put it on our desk for the day. The student is subsequently welcome to complete their school work using a classroom Netbook computer. Students can access all of their work from the Google Drive on the Netbooks, so they will still be able to complete ALL of the required tasks for the day. The iPad is then returned at the end of the day. We have a spreadsheet that is shared with all the teachers where we record the date, as well as what happened, in order to keep track of how the student is using their iPad.
After the third incident of misuse, the student will leave the iPad at school for a twenty-four hour period. The student will call their parents to discuss why they will not be able to take their iPad home. If the student cannot reach the parent, they will write a note explaining why the iPad is not coming home. This note will require a parent signature. Once we confirm communication with the parent, the iPad will be returned to the student. This will ensure that students take accountability for their behaviors at school.
When a student reaches five incidents, a parent meeting will be arranged, and the student will lose the iPad for three days. The core one teacher and the TA will be in attendance to facilitate this meeting.
If the student has seven incidents, the student will meet with Karen Weeks in order to create a student plan for the iPad. This may include alternatives that allow the student to access the learning activities, but also decrease distractions for the student.
